Elizabeth Friend,
daughter of
Cornelius Ward Friend
Book II
by
Patrick T. SmithElizabeth Friend was the daughter of Cornelius Ward Friend, granddaughter of John Friend, Jr. and great granddaughter of John Friend, Sr. of Friendsville, MD. Elizabeth would marry Joseph L. Forsyth (Forsythe) in 1857. Their marriage would last ten years and result in a family of at least four children (Leona Laura Forsyth, John Ellsworth Forsyth, Sarah Alberta Forsyth, and Mary Elizabeth Forsyth). Elizabeth Friend was described as a very dainty women who loved pretty clothes. She was a seamstress, who stayed indoors, helping her mother.
Elizabeth, Joseph, and their families would be drawn into the American Civil War. Joseph would enlist as a private in 1862 with the 3 rd Regiment of MD Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade, and serve until 1864 leaving as a second lieutenant. These books were built with birth, marriage, death, and burial records, then expanded with the US Census, family bibles, books, land deeds, wills, estate records, photographs, personal histories, and military accounts. The first chapter of each book has a brief review on the Friend Family starting Nils Larsson Friend (Frande), a Swedish immigrant who came to the new world in 1648. The history proceeds from father to son, ending with Elizabeth Friend’s father Cornelius Ward Friend. The second chapter features information on Elizabeth Friend and her husband, Joseph Forsyth. Book I will chronicle Leona Laura Forsyth, John Ellsworth Forsyth (the two oldest surviving children), as well as their descendants. Book II presents the families of the remaining two known children (Sarah Alberta Forsyth and Mary Elizabeth Forsyth). A child is featured in one book will be
