Cornelius Ward Friend (2nd Edition) Book I
by
Patrick T. SmithCornelius Ward Friend was the second son of John Friend, Jr. (1764 to 1849) and Elizabeth Ward (1778 to 1845) and the grandson of John Friend, Sr. (1728 to Aft 1808) and Karrenhappuck (Kerrenhappuck) Hyatt (1732 to 1798). He was born in 1804 and grew up in Sang Run, MD on a farm known as Friend’s Delight. Cornelius would marry Sarah Kemp (Kamp), travel to Carroll County, OH and begin a family, but eventually move back to Friendsville, MD. The first edition on Cornelius and his family was published in 2007 and contained five hundred pages. This edition has been years in the making and has produced eight books on three children (John Henry Friend, Elizabeth Friend and William Henry Harrison Friend) and Cornelius Ward Friend, containing over four thousand pages. These books were formed with birth, marriage, death, and burial records, then expanded with the US Census, family bibles, books, land deeds, wills, estate records, photographs, personal histories, and military accounts.
The first chapter of this book has a brief review on the Friend Family genealogy starting with Nils Larsson Friend (Frande), a Swedish immigrant who came to the New World in 1648. This history proceeds to Cornelius’ father, John Friend, Jr. The second chapter features information on Cornelius Ward Friend and his wife, Sarah Kemp, while the following chapters chronicled their children from the oldest to the youngest. Chapter III presents information on Mariah Jane Friend and Ira Ellis Friend, while Chapter IV briefly covers John Henry Friend, William Friend, Sarah Jane Friend, Elizabeth Friend and William Henry Harrison Friend. Chapter V presents information on James Friend and Martha Jane Friend, while the last two sons (Marshall Friend and Zachariah (Zachary) Taylor Friend) will be presented in a second book, or books of their own. A child is featured in one book will be briefly outlined in the corresponding books. The goal of these books is to preserve a small portion Cornelius Ward Friend, his wife, Sarah Kemp, and that of their descendants.
