Charles Friend, Gertrude (Katurah) Cantery and Their Descendants of Swede’s Delight Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland
Children: Gabriel Friend, Jacob Friend, Charles Friend
    by
    Patty Friend Thompson

Charles Friend, son of Andrew (Anders) Friend, was Nils Larsson Friend’s grandson. Charles was born between 1699 and 1701 in New Castle County, Delaware, near today’s Wilmington, Delaware. Charles’ death occurred before 20 Mar 1795 at Swede’s Delight, near present day Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland.

Charles Friend carries the distinction of being the first settler of Washington County, MD.  He settled on land called “Swede’s Delight” at the confluence of Conocheague Creek and the Potomac River.

Charles had married Gertrude “Garthy” Cantery by1728 in Cecil County, Maryland. While her parents are unknown to us, we believe she was born about 1710 and died before 15 Nov 1790. To this union three sons were born, Gabriel Friend, Jacob Friend and Charles Friend.

While no photographs or diaries of Charles Friend have been found to-date, this book is an attempt to document Charles Friend’s life and the lives of his descendants by using documents such as U. S. Census, birth, marriage and death records, deeds, court records and other supporting documents before it is lost to time.
