The Maps and
Papers of
William H. H. Friend
2nd Edition

by
Patrick T. Smith
and
Patty (Friend) Thompson
The life of
William Henry Harrison Friend can be described in a detached,
historical manner. William H. H. Friend was a
Civil War Veteran, farmer, father, husband and land surveyor who lived in
Western Maryland. Through an extraordinary turn
of luck, many of William’s surveys have survived the passage of time. William’s
original hand drawn maps and hand written surveys have remained virtually unseen
by the public for over a century. The Maps and Papers of William H. H.
Friend was originally published (2006) in a 219-page book. Since that
time with the invaluable help of Patty (Friend Thompson, we have
uncovered additional material about William, his descendants and this
collection of work. This 2nd edition book, 408 pages, (fully indexed)
relates a more comprehensive glimpse into the lifr of William H. H.
Friend and his descendents. This book provides guidelines for
interpreting the work and adds numerous present day maps, shown in
greater detail, for the locations of William's land plats. The book
contains over one hundred high resolution digital scans of William's
maps and surveys, as well as commentary on each, plus most of the Land
Records of Allegany/Garrett County relating to the plats
